Battle 33 - Outer Space and Out of Time

Welcome to the battle of the Double 3s!

Usual rules about being fully produced within the OP-1 and recorded to album, etc., and…

1. You must use at least one sample, but as many more as you wish, from the NASA Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/nasa I believe these have been used in previous battle, but not as a rule. I have a particular fondness for NASA and space exploration, for a multitude of reasons.

2. At least 1/2 of the tune must be in an ‘odd meter’, i.e. not 4/4. You can do 3/4, 5/4, 7/8, 13/16, 63/64 etc. If you do something more ephemeral/ambient, at least try to make it sound somehow off-kilter, if you see what I mean. I know this will not always be easy, esp. when it comes to looping on tape… but that’s the challenge!

3. Feel free to use any internal synth or stock drum kit, but no other samples that are not from NASA.

4. Have fun and enjoy yourself.

Entry deadline: May 3rd

Edit: Also feel free to use any samples from NASA, including the ones at Archive.org (mentioned below) https://archive.org/details/nasaaudiocollection

Oh this sounds interesting!

SPACE SAMPLES! yes! great brief!
I have to get in on this competition.

Last year ADAMSKI released an album in 3/4 (waltz) timing - he did a few interviews that are worth checking out to do with strange timings, I think Sonic State did a video interview with him actually.

7/4 and 13/4 !!!

My favorites !!
:smiley:
This and space samples, really fine challenge, @wingo !

[Unneeded note : the lower number of the fraction 3/4 means that the unit of time is “a whole note divided by 4” = a quarter note. So if you mean a measure of 7 quarter notes you should write it 7/4. That was my 2 pence of musical theory.]

I remember that… I think it was SonicState. Would make sense because I think the guy Mark that always shows up is Adamski’s brother. Here is an interesting article I found, with examples: http://www.attackmagazine.com/technique/passing-notes/bored-of-44-other-time-signatures-in-dance-music/

'tis true that 7/4 is 7 quarter notes in a bar, but 7/8 is also a thing - just 7 1/8th notes (quavers) in a bar. The difference is mostly contextual… it depends on where you feel the main pulse. Sort of like the difference between 3/4 and 6/8. It’s about the phrasing, really. And even stuff like 11/16 is technically real, but you’re wading into ridiculous math rock territory there. :slight_smile:

Ahah no pb, I just wasn’t sure you were aware of this @wingo, and I felt it was interesting to add a little note (:B) on musical theory…

Quaver/eighth note is rarely seen, so the 63/64 notation seemed to me closer of a pattern length in a sequencer than a real measure notation.

and 7/4 is definitely not the same as 7/8 ^^
but I understand what you mean…

Oh, I’m so going to do this one.

@wingo Emma’s dream phone is a sick track! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXeBZ-UnZ4w

Thanks for hosting and nice rulez. Im in, will be lots of fun and learning.

A big Hello to everyone.
This is my contribution to the competition:

Enjoy!

Oh, I need to make something for this, I love space samples, and 3/4 time music! If you are interested in NASA samples there is a ton of stuff available at archive.org (here: https://archive.org/details/nasaaudiocollection) but I assume that for this competition we only use the soundcloud stuff, right?

@stahlwerk I say feel free to use any samples that come from NASA. Thanks for the link!

Hey @Kosmonaut_Bill looks like your link just goes to your profile... I think this is the actual track link below (sounds great!):

Thanx a lot for your help @wingo
…seems that all these various “internet-things” are still riddles for me :slight_smile:

Can we use those ones ?

@Tomavatars I’m cool with that!

@wingo great :slight_smile:

well here’s mine, I decided to only use Nasa samples and no internal synths, and I think it’s in a 5/4 kind of feel

thanks for hosting this battle @wingo I think its going to be a good one!

Dude, yeah @Overseas_Territory, that’s what I’m talking about! I love that people are getting the idea and experimenting with it. Keep 'em coming!

I’d love to be part of this. I will see if I have the time - also I’m still learning the basics of the machine…

I can’t find any instructions on how to enter. Maybe I didn’t search carefully enough (I’m at work). Do I just upload my entry on my soundcloud and then link it in this thread?
