Can OP-1 FM synth produce Megadrive/Genesis style tones?

I imagine to get that gulpy and harsh (or soft) metallic sound that the Megadrive could produce was due to the onboard sound chip, the YM2612. Basically a DX7.

Or can the FM synth on OP-1 get there?

If so, any tips?

Fm totally can produce that. Check the most up to date presets(i.e. be updated)

Dr wave can get pretty chiptuny. Cuckoo put out a pack once filled with that kinda goodness.

Sampler should be able to get something going too.

The hidden iter engine sounds somewhat fmy to me. Kinda two competing voices modulating each other.

Each of the synth engines has a super wide pallet just experiment and you will find more then enough to satisfy your Sonic needs.

Didn’t realise Megadrive was FM. Had a SNES back in the day, so no exposure. Have always been obsessed with the FM sounds of old Atari coin-ops - 720, Paperboy, Roadblasters etc. So good.

And Marble Madness!

And Marble Madness!

+1 Loved the music!

I think I remember chatting to Cuckoo about Megadrive FM synth and, if I remember correctly he said it was a bit beyond the OP-1
