Vcv rack

Anyone else digging in to this atm? Just checked it out last night and it’s spewing out some amazing samples/sequences/ambient… Kinda making me gas for a modular but at same time I’m instantly getting used to having ability to save presets and pick it up at radom moments to tweak patches which = remembering half reason I’ve swerved hardware modular is lack of spare time…

Works pretty well on Surface Pro. Fun standalone experimenting and tons of free modules… Need to do some research and try and integrate/sync with Ableton/Octatrack and see how that stuff works out/possibilities…

Have seen this popup here and there so going to have to check it out.

So is it ALL for free or do you only get so much stuff then have to pay for more - e.g like all the MI stuff?

Certainly seems a lot more like “actual modular” than the likes of Reaktor Blocks.

If it can be integrated/synced etc with a modular then you could use it for all VCA/VCO’s etc and just buy the real physical more specialist modules.

comes with a bunch of basic modules until you hit their wiki and omg, so much stuff just falls out, all free at this time.

@spacetravelmadeeasy

Yeah the ‘daw’ is free and modules are nearly all free, couple of devs are charging £ but a LOT of free modules available. Gathered a ton to check out over wknd… Kinda overwhelming tho in terms of checking out different versions of similar modules and see which I dig most…

Like @eesn says, check the wiki at this link or github search for links to modules - https://github.com/VCVRack/Rack/wiki/List-of-plugins
And a bunch of modules come built-in with the install after registeration.

Yeah, if integration with hardware is solid/not too complex etc then this software seems like it could be really interesting/money-saving…

Has ableton link too apparently. Cdm has a nice feature on it today.

Had another hour on this today. Pretty hooked so far… Steep learning curve/overwhelming pile of modules for someone like me with only basic synthesis/cv+gate sequencing chops. But figuring stuff out and got some cool stuff happening in a patch earlier…

Excited to see it all develop. Hoping for midi learn to show up for fluid physical knobs assignment and some little refinements in the sampler modules (like sample audition when browsing to load and I think one of the samplers I was using doesn’t save/load sample with ‘patch save/load’) but even as it is it feels like a killer go-to for inspiration…

Never used modular before so can’t compare to hardware eurorack but I was getting an almost octatrack feeling from the patch I had setup today… Which is something I always miss whenever using only ITB…

Still only had couple hours in VCV but digging it a lot…
Here’s a shitty audio vid of my first patches. Spits out some very cool stuff and reminds me of OT/Op1 in terms of spitting out random inspiration -

Recently got this as well, very fun, need to dig in properly but just having access to clones of the mutable stuff is incredible for me. The only reason I don’t have modular gear is money. Hoping to get it set up with Ableton this week so I can have everything Integrated.

Patch points on the front panel, that feature alone puts it above Blocks for me - always seemed like a faff to have to switch views for patching.

Same for me. Dread to think how much some of the patches I’ve been cobbling together would cost for hardware equivalents  Maybe over next couple of years I’ll start to cherry pick a few hardware pieces tho, VCV is a pretty amazing tool to audition setups and find out which pieces I’d get the most use/fun out of in hardware… Trying to keep myself away from the real deal tho for obvious reasons

Same as you re ableton too. Doubt I’ll get time to look at ableton integration til after Xmas now tho, let us know how you get on

The Turing machine module is great btw. Pretty much made me want the real one!! There’s a lot of great stuff being done for it… Monome grids are in beta and someone is coding the teletype module!!!

Im loving vcv rack!

im hopeful each app in the O&C gets broken out into individual uO&C modules! I expect it will since its open source and MXMXMX is a great member of the community.

Crazy enough it convinced me to sell off most of my rack and instead focus more on individual instruments. Essentially making buchla 208s. So Far ive used my LVCO and some modules plus a keystep to make my own version of a minimoog. Next is an easel ish system with a 208.

I found myself more often then not just thinking about the complex patches and less time just making music or free form patching. Its not that I didn’t love the crazy thoughts Id have. it just meant i wasnt making music. everything was a thought experiment with my rack. With VCV Rack I can do the same thing but so much faster. Plus its instantly dropped into ableton. Thus Im now focusing more on building my own hardware instruments (still mostly euro) and less with massive 600hp systems. With VCV rack I can build those complex systems far more easily and with way more features! its wonderful!

I hope they port this to ipad/tablet hmm maybe i should try on a windows tablet…

It’s OK on Surface Pro. Bit clunky but useable. My pen’s broken atm tho and guessing would be a lot more fluid if I could use that… Would love to see a version (or update) optimised for purely touchscreen tho…

Finally got round to grabbing the Mschack modules last night. Really useful/practical/creative modules. Some quite unique tools among what’s out there. The Triad sequencer is great to have around for quickly sequencing ‘intended’ patterns and then experimenting with them…

Can see some of my hardware possibly becoming quite redundant over next year or so depending how this pans out…

Really beautiful graphics. Unfortunately, my computer starts to wigg out after only a couple of modules. It’s a very promising platform I think.

For me, axoloti is still the most exciting thing in a long time. I approach it as I would the nord modular but it’s so much more than that. Not as pretty as this though.

@throrange I just wish the Axoloti was more user-friendly for people who don’t want to code - getting started on the Ax was extremely difficult IME. Now I’m a bit more confident, but it literally took hours to get something working at first - there is zero documentation to help beginners with it.

ttttthhhhhat said it’s pretty crazy for the price!

Back on topic though: VCV is definitely killing my GAS for Euro gear - a few hours with it is getting some killer sounds, but nothing that makes me cry tears of GAS ifyaknowwhatimeanmates

millbastard your profile pic of the nl makes me happy :-} I see what you mean though. I am definitely am a casual user with the axoliti. I’m a non-coder for sure. My coding skills are shit house to non-existent. But the stuff shared is already enough for me.

I reminded of a mate I had who was always buying instruments (and could use them very well) he had a hartmann neuron and a capybara at one point. Both are examples of instruments/platforms ahead of their times; albeit technically flawed.

I see the vcv format winning out. It’s still early but it has everything going for it from what I can hear.

@throrange yeah the VCV format makes a lot of sense as well - why have all these modules with tiny CPUs in them when everyone has a laptop already? I see a dedicated modular interface with assignable patchbay/patchpoints and a bunch of knobs/sliders/buttons in the future

p.s. yep had my NL2 for a good couple of years now! Not my favourite filter in the world, but if I need more juice I put it through the Sherman or the BS2 external in. On a sidenote, I went and tried a DSI Rev 2 a few weeks back and was shocked how much it sounded/felt like an NL2

This looks so cool! Will download and test it out.

This might be a stupid question since I’m totally new to modular, bit Is it possible to route/play audio from the OP-1 into the VCV Rack and use it as an effect device?

Can’t get this vid to work at the mo.

Some of those early patches evolved in to an EP after layering some op1 and AK so I pulled the vid  Can definitely recommend grabbing vcv tho if you haven’t already
