Distortion pedal for synths

I’ve been looking around at pedals on a budget for synths and wondered what others have in their line-up for distortions

I’m torn between the Proco Rat, the Boss DS-1 and the TC electronics Dark Matter (all in at between £50 and £60). Any advice?

Is that Mooer Black Secret any good?

budget you say?..if you’ve ever had the urge to pick up a soldering iron now is the time – distortion pedals are the easiest guitar pedals to make…and cost about $10 in parts. all the pedals you mention are cloned and can be easily made.

I dont recommend the DS-1 on synths, it makes them sound flat and muddy

DIY is the way !
Pedals like Screamer 2 on TechniGuitare keep the bass, I think it’s an important feature with a synth.
It sounds just ace on my bass guitar and my Avalon Bassline.

I also have a Dr Scientist’s Elements and it’s the most versatile distorsion pedal I’ve tried.

Don't mind a bit of soldering but not really comfortable with sourcing materials or building enclosures. Used to really enjoy building Eurorack modules through kits bought on Thonk.co.uk but can't really find an FX pedal equivalent, does this exist? Bought a cheap delay kit on eBay once (from China) and the instructions were so poor I messed it up big style and ended up binning it.

I’ve had my share of building pedals, good stuff. Though usually just use my Big Muff or OCD clone with the Guitar. If you’re interested in DIY then check out Tayda Electronics, they even have enclosures that fit typical needs like 1590b or smaller 1590a.

Cheap but take a bit to get to the states as there in China.

There’s a little taster/demo of Oto Machines BOUM on Facebook- I’m in love already

Thanks Jonesy! That BOUM sounds awesome. I’ve had BIM & BAM for almost a year, the trifecta is nearly complete:)

Got a link to the BOUM demo?? I want to see!

See Jonesy’s link below

GCF go to FB and search oto machines.

I did and couldn't find a BOUM demo...

Hey folks. I’m new here. Diggin in.

As far as distortion for synth goes, I highly recommend a pedal with wet and dry controls.
Build it, buy it whatever. But having the ability to add in a dry signal I’ve found to be essential in sculpting the tone.
I use the MXR M85 Bass Distortion. Its a RAT based distortion, a collaboration with Fuzzrocious pedals.
Sounds great on Minitaur, Juno, Organelle patches, etc.
