Portable Scratching (with Traktor)

Anyone here using a portable turntable n xfader along with their OP-1 or other music making gear?

I’m fancying getting myself a turntable. I’ve got a lot of vinyl but no turntable!

This Numark PT01-Scratch seems like amazing fun!

I have NI Traktor (just software) and was wondering that if I got a traktor timecode 7" can I feed it into Traktor to control it and scratch tracks inside traktor?
Or do I need to buy Traktor Scratch Software?

How portable are we talking here?

I’ve been on the edge of getting one of the Raiden Faders. I have the PT-01. Looks like good fun. RTST is a guy I went to high school with, and he is killing it on the portable turntable stuff (and regular turntables).

I was eyeing up that PT-01 too, looks pretty fun, although I’d possibly want to upgrade it a bit to replace my record deck. The whole portablism scene has blown up and to be honest looks pretty fun, and the strangest thing is about 2 years ago I was toying with the idea of making a self contained passive cross fader, 2 stereo inputs and 1 stereo output, I did not think there would be much call for such a thing so I shelved it, now I see that it appears I was wrong.

Wow that looks nice.
I’ve been using Kaoss pads as a portable on/off switch.- Turn on Send mode( turn off direct) and the pad triggers audio on ,whenever touched!
Super easy crab scuttles - with an added effect ,like LPF chopper thrown in. Very useful for getting faux scratching on the go.

@ludicrouSpeed pretty portable! i’ve seen videos with people scratching up on mountains

@darenager

You are right about this scene blowing up at the moment. The more I look into it the more stuff I see to customise these decks, better tonarms, better crossfaders external crossfaders and even stuff like arcade button start/stop mods and better pitch control mods too.
If you’ve got the know how you could make a nice little bit on the side making good quality products. Some of the crossfaders are like £65.

Today I just grabbed a PT01-Scratch and it should hopefully arrive tomorrow along with a slipmat and scratch 7"
I’m REALLY looking forward to playing with this and getting back into scratching.

I found out today that local Edinburgh DJ called Ritchie Rufftone (DMC Champion) has his own wee ‘scratch shop’ online.
http://www.turntabletrainingwax.com/ - the 7" I got is his Practice Yo! Cuts Vol 3.

Bihari does some real nice tone arms that let you add on more professional cartridges.

and some cool skins too.

I’m adding these all here to share but also as a reminder for me

Oh and with regards to Timecode vinyl …
If you have an iPad then there’s an App called DJPlayer that supports timecoded vinyl and no other hardware is needed other than the Apple CCK.
http://djplayerpro.com/
Looks like you plug the usb from the turntable into the CCK then into the ipad runnin the DJPlayer app.

Wonder if there’s more ipad/iphone apps that support the timecode like this

Please, if you find any other helpful links - share share share!

Excellent share fellow - thanks!

I liked this demo by DJCityTV. He reviewed some other stuff like the ResQ BT1 portable speaker.

Well, I got some Serato 7" Vinyl and can now use my PT01-Scratch to control the audio within IOS DJing apps.

The annoying thing is that when using the USB OUT from the PT-01 Srcratch the crossfader doesn’t work - you have to purchase an external fader.

I thought about going the bluetooth route with the Mixfader but it’s too much of a tie-in and have read mixed reviews. Decided to go analogue with the Stokyo Kutter in Grey

I’ve ordered a solder-free start/stop button kit - that’ll probably take a wee while to get to me though as coming from Germany.

Looking forward to a scratching weekend!

How are the rest of you getting on with your portable scratch habbit?

I’m working on a few custom modifications that hopefully I might start selling if all goes well.

DJ Apps for IOS that support DVS that I’ve downloaded and used successfully are …

DJ Player Pro
Edjing Mix
and there’s also Mixfader DJ - this is primarily for the mixfader fader if you get one.

I’ve got a pt01 scratch and it’s awesome. The scratch switch is really good, but I’ve upgraded to a Raiden fader which is very good to.

The amount of upgrades/custom parts on the portablism scene is ace. Tone arms, blue tooth kits, faders.

Lots of cool stuff on YouTube and insta.

It’s also worth noting if your moding the tone arm you will need to install a preamp kit. There are solderless versions for sale now to by Bihari

Here’s a bit of PT01 scratch and OP-1 fun with my neighbour on scratch.

We just do that now in the garden for hours (with a few beers).

We did it again last might and today my head hurts.

question about these lil portable crossfaders.

notice a lot of these are passive, is there a volume drop normally associated w/ passive mixers or na?

@docshermsticks

yeah a little is lost. when i was testing the xfader my iphone signal coming out of the fader is really quiet - the output from the pt01scratch is a lot louder so had to turn it right down. This was listening in my home with headphones. If you wanted to listen outdoors then id recommend getting a headphone amp.

thanks @spacetravelmadeeasy

figured it would be the case since it is passive.

had no idea there was all this cool mini turntable stuff / mods out there

PT01-Scratch is the best legal fun you can have

I’m still using the baby scratch ios app. I usually have the ipad close by the OP. iPad mini=super portable.

@spacetravelmadeeasy

I’m wondering why in all the write ups I read on these setups no one suggests to use the Native Instruments USB to Lightning cable instead of the Apple Camera connector. It’s $10 cheaper and eliminates the need for an adapter.

Do you see any reason this wouldn’t work?
